Above Ocho Rios the White River stacks up into limestone pools the colour of bottle glass, with a rope swing over the deepest one and a cave you swim into. Most drivers staple Secret Falls onto the same ticket and still have you back at the pier by mid-afternoon. Bring shoes you do not mind soaking.

At Falmouth the water lights up around you.
The Luminous Lagoon holds microorganisms that flare bright blue the second anything disturbs them, so the boats wait for proper dark and then let you swim. West of there the cliffs at Rick’s fill up an hour before sunset, and the bar bus works its way down Norman Manley Boulevard long after.
On the Martha Brae the raftsman does the work.
Thirty feet of lashed bamboo, a two-seat bench and a punter who has poled this stretch of Trelawny a thousand times. It takes about an hour and asks nothing of you. The Great River and the Lethe do the same job west of Montego Bay.
Where the records were actually made.
Bob Marley was born in Nine Mile, high in the St Ann hills, and is buried there in a mausoleum his family still looks after. In Kingston the museum on Hope Road keeps the house much as he left it. Both run with guides who grew up inside the story.
The Blue Mountains start where the coast road gives up.
An hour above Kingston the air cools, the switchbacks tighten and the coffee terraces begin. Growers pick by hand between three and five thousand feet, and roast within sight of the trees. Further west the Appleton stills have been running in St Elizabeth since 1749, and Rose Hall still trades on its ghost.
Jamaica splits by coast, and each coast books differently.
Montego Bay has the airport and the widest choice of anything. Ocho Rios has the falls and the cruise pier. Negril has the seven-mile beach and the cliffs. Falmouth has the lagoon. Kingston has the music, and the mountains standing behind it.

Nine Mile sits in the St Ann hills where Bob Marley was born and buried. The Black River runs through mangrove full of crocodiles. Appleton has been distilling in St Elizabeth since 1749. None of them is close, and all of them are worth the morning.
Three days that use the island properly.
You will spend longer in the car than you expect, so group the days by coast rather than by mood. This is the order that works from a Montego Bay base, and each day opens on the options behind it.
Day 1
East to the Blue Hole
East along the coast to the Blue Hole while the light is still soft. Jump the deep pool, swim into the cave, add Secret Falls if the driver offers it. Back on a beach by four with the first sunburn of the trip.

A slow morning on the river
The raft down the Martha Brae runs about an hour and asks nothing of you. Pair it with the limestone massage at the landing, or swap in an ATV climb into the hills if the group wants noise instead.

Ninety minutes down to Negril, the length of Seven Mile Beach in the afternoon, then up onto the cliffs at Rick’s before six so you get a table for the divers and the sunset behind them.
